• Merry offers an intriguing insight into Jose Sorzano, who would later be Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and Senior Director for Latin American Affairs at the NSC. At the UN, the idea of schmoozing seems more appropriate given that they are not making policy so much as lobbying. The same could be said of Sorzano's time as president of CANF. But at NSC, his work was to analyze and predict, something that seemed to put him in conflict with John Negroponte and others.

• The best advice I got when I first arrived in New York was from José Sorzano, who had been in New York two years already before he moved into the senior deputy job. He told me, "There is an enormous amount of paper at the UN, but this is not a paper place, this is a people place. Don't work the paper. Work the people." That was exceptionally good advice. (133)
